Sucking water into your internal combustion engine is more common than you might think. If you do a lot of offroading and ride through rivers, streams, puddles, and lakes, or if you spend any time riding with people like Travis Pastrana, you are more likely to get water in your engineespecially if you don't have a snorkel.

The problem with getting water in your engine is that your engine was designed to compress air and gas as the piston moves up, ignite it and use the resultant explosion to push the piston back down. Water can NOT be compressed when the piston moves up. The resulting damage could include a hole in the cylinder wall, a hole in the piston head, blown out valves or a hole in the head.

The water will go somewhere, and it will take the weakest route it can find. This is known as a hydro-locked engine. Getting the water IN the engine is easy. Getting it out, without destroying the engine, can be more of a challenge. First I'll share a few ways you can get the water in your engine so you'll be a bit more prepared while you're offroading and you'll know what to look for and what to avoid. Riding on an ice-covered lake is a great way to get water in your engine.

It's also a great way to freeze your nads off if you fall through, so water in the engine may be the least of your worries at this point. If the ice is thin and you ride over it, you could fall through. Unless you're quick to shut the engine off you're almost guaranteed to get water in your engine. Crossing streams, lakes, and rivers that are too deep is another great way to get water in your engine.

Carburetors and air-boxes are typically on the upper end of the engine so you'd have to be pretty deep to get water in there, but it can happen.

Know where your air intake is and be sure to keep that above the water line. When you cross deep water going too fast you risk splashing water up into the air box and having it get sucked into the engine. It only takes a little bit of water in your engine to destroy it, so be careful crossing deep water too fast. So when you've got water in your engine, and if you're lucky enough to have it shut itself off before it does any real damage, there are a few steps you should take to clear the water out before you try to start it:.

Matt Finley. Matt Finley is a sports writer specializing in off-road recreation. First, drain the fuel tank, fuel lines, and the oil. While it's draining, put a fan on the wiring and dry it out. Remove and clean the carburetor.

Take the plugs out of the engine and turn the motor over to force any water in the cylinder out. Water in other parts of the engine will come out with the oil. Add oil to the engine and turn it over again, without the plugs in. Let it sit for a few minutes, then check the oil to see if there's any water in it it will look like a white milky substance if there is water mixed with the oil. If it's there, drain it again and start over until there is little or no white showing in the oil.

Now re-install the spark plug, add gas, then try to start it. You should have a can of ether handy just in case it's stubborn, but don't use too much. If it starts, let it run for a couple of minutes without revving it. Don't ride it either. After it runs for a few minutes, shut it off, drain the oil, and change the filter. Run it again for a few minutes then shut it off and check again for milky colored oil.

If you have none, you should be good to go. If you cannot start the engine, you may have already ruined it and you will probably need to seek a professional to repair it, or, more likely, you'll have to replace it.Figuring out the right oil to use for optimum performance of your dirt bike need not be difficult.

Just like a car, different engines from different manufacturers use different oil. The key in finding the right oil is two-fold. First, do you ride a 2-stroke or 4-stroke dirt bike? There is a big difference here not only in oil but in what you do with the oil. Check out our 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke exhaust guides. Two-stroke oil is used in crankcase compression two-stroke engines.

The four-stroke engine utilizes a closed crankcase. The crankcase in the two-stroke engine is used as part of the induction tract. Therefore, in a two-stroke engine you mix your two-stroke oil with gasoline - the gasoline acting as lubrication throughout the engine. Two-stroke oil is a bit different than 4-stroke oil in that 2-stroke engine oil does not have weight indications.

Additionally, two main types of 2-stroke oil exist: injector safe and pre-mix. Most dirt bikes fall into the pre-mix category that is combined with gas.

Four-stroke oil is more like the oil used in cars but both 2-stroke and 4-stroke oil serve the same purpose - to keep the engine lubricated. Four-stroke dirt bike oil comes in a variety of weights like 10w, 20w and so on. It is not mixed with gas. So now what oil should you use?

The second key to finding the right oil for your dirt bike is: Read your owner's manual to find what oil the manufacturer recommends for your bike. If your manufacturer recommends 20w for your 4-stroke then don't buy 10w weight oil. The most common weight for dirt bikes is 10w Your owner's manual also explains what ratio to mix your oil and gas for the 2-stroke engine in order to get the best performance.

It can be anywhere from to and all in between. Always check your owner's manual for the correct weight in oil that works best with your dirt bike. Once you know what weight oil to use, then we can recommend specific brands of oil in the manufacturer's suggested weight for your machine. We carry all the different oils your dirt bike requires to run smoothly and run efficiently without breaking down.

If you're running a 2-stroke make it easy on yourself and get a measuring cup device so you can accurately measure the oil-to-gas ratio recommended by the bike's manufacturer. Here are some recommendations for measuring cups. Maxima Quick 2 Mix. Ratio Rite Measuring Cup.

You'd never put that in your engine but it's exactly what you'll use in your transmission. Gear oil or transmission oil requires a higher viscosity to protect those vital parts from break-down and to cool off your clutch. A word to the wise: Don't use car transmission oil - it causes clutch failure in your dirt bike. Maxima Hypoid Gear Oil.

We use Ebay global logistics service for international shipping. This time, there was gas in the oil. He thinks my husband was running the choke too much, but my husband is sure he hasn't been. The mechanic adjusted the idle downwards, but my husband thought the idle was set too low, since the thing stalls when it's idling sometimes.

My husband hadn't adjusted the idel, however. Any other ideas? This mechanic is pretty experienced, but we have our ATV in so much, I am wondering how competent he is. We do not use this ATV hard - we do plow snow with it, but don't go riding around on rocks and all that off trail stuff. We never have it over 30 MPH. We are the original owners. The carburetor has a float that, when the bowl is full of gas, pushes a "needle" into an opening and shuts the gas off from coming in.

If this needle is not sealing properly, it will allow gas to keep coming in and flow into the combustion chamber. Over night the gas can seep past the rings and valves into the crankcase. The solution would be to get the needle replaced. With all respects to Franky ,all I know is that in some older six cylinder Chevrolet motors sometimes on rare occasions there will be a hole in the fuel pump diaphragm that will allows gasoline into the crankcase and if this is not caught and repaired it will result in burning the motor up for like of lubrication.

I don't know much about four wheelers but maybe this will help. If the ATV has no call, how can the economic agency instruct there's a lean on it? On precise of that, if the deepest loan became coated interior the financial ruin, and has been discharged, then the economic agency would not have the skill to gather.

There has been many carb problems since ethanol. The carb fills up with fuel and then fills the motor. If this is happening, try shutting the fuel off and let the carb run dry when done riding. It seems to help. After all that work, it turned out my air filter was to blame. I cleaned it and now the quad is running like a champ.
